Best Areas Near Major UK Attractions for Large Group Meals

Practical advice on where large groups can eat well near London, Edinburgh, Bath, York and other popular UK stops.

What makes an area good for group dining?

Knowing where to eat with a large group near UK attractions is half the battle when planning an itinerary. The ideal area combines three things: restaurants with enough space to seat a group together, a short walk from the attraction, and a practical place for a coach to drop off and collect.

Popular tourist areas are often the hardest places to find group space at short notice, because restaurants fill with individual diners. Booking ahead and choosing the right streets — sometimes just one or two away from the main sight — makes a significant difference.

  • Restaurants with private or semi-private areas
  • Walking distance from the attraction
  • Coach drop-off within reach
  • Kitchens used to serving groups quickly

London: dining around the major landmarks

London has more choice than anywhere else in the UK, but central areas are busy and coach access is restricted. Around Westminster and the South Bank, groups visiting the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye or Westminster Abbey benefit from venues along the river, where larger dining rooms are more common than in narrow side streets.

Near the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, the area around the City offers restaurants used to lunchtime crowds, with generous capacity. Covent Garden and the West End are ideal for pre-theatre dinners, though timing is critical in the evening. For groups visiting museums in South Kensington, nearby streets have restaurants that welcome school and family groups.

Whatever the area, coach parking in central London is limited and controlled. Plan drop-off and pick-up points in advance and allow extra time for traffic.

Edinburgh: Old Town and New Town

In Edinburgh, most groups spend time on the Royal Mile between the castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The Old Town has atmospheric venues, but many are small and on several floors. Look for restaurants just off the Royal Mile or in the Grassmarket, where there is more space for groups.

The New Town, a short walk away across Princes Street Gardens, has wider streets and larger dining rooms, and is easier for coach drop-offs. During the August festival season, demand is extremely high — book well ahead and expect tighter timings.

Bath, York and Oxford

Historic cities are some of the most popular stops on UK coach tours, and they share one challenge: compact centres with limited coach access. In Bath, groups visiting the Roman Baths and the Abbey are best served by restaurants within a few minutes' walk of the city centre coach drop-off points.

In York, the area around the Minster and the Shambles is pedestrian-friendly, and several larger venues cater for groups. In Oxford, restaurants close to the main colleges and the high street are convenient for walking tours, but space fills quickly during term-time events.

  • Bath: near the Roman Baths and Abbey
  • York: around the Minster and city walls
  • Oxford: close to the high street and colleges

Beyond the cities: stops on the road

Not every group meal happens in a city centre. Touring itineraries through the Cotswolds, the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands or North Wales often need a reliable lunch stop between scenic drives. Country pubs and hotels with large dining rooms and car parks can be ideal, provided they are booked in advance and briefed on arrival times.

Practical booking tips

Whichever area you choose, a few habits help every group meal run smoothly:

  • Book group space early — popular areas fill first
  • Agree a set menu to speed up service
  • Confirm dietary requirements in writing
  • Check coach access and drop-off points
  • Share a realistic arrival time and update the venue if you are delayed
