Edinburgh group travel guide for tour operators
Edinburgh is one of the most visited cities in the UK and one of the easiest to fall in love with. It is also hilly, cobbled and very busy at certain times of year. Here is how we plan Edinburgh for groups.
The Old Town and the Royal Mile
The Royal Mile runs downhill from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. We usually schedule the Castle first thing, walk down the Mile through the morning and finish at Holyrood, so the group walks downhill rather than up. Timed entry for the Castle is essential for groups.
Group dining in Edinburgh
Old Town restaurants are often in historic buildings with smaller rooms, so seating a large group together needs advance planning. The New Town, a short walk north, offers larger dining rooms and private spaces for evening meals. We match the venue to your group size and the occasion.
Scottish menus with local salmon, beef and seasonal produce are popular, and we cover all dietary requirements in advance.
Whisky and cultural experiences
Whisky tastings near the Castle are a favourite with adult groups. Ceilidh evenings, with traditional music and dancing, work well for corporate and incentive groups. For school groups, the free National Museum of Scotland and the climb up Calton Hill are reliable choices.
Festival season and peak dates
In August the Edinburgh festivals fill the city. Hotels, restaurants and coaches book out early, and prices rise. If your dates fall in August or around Hogmanay, contact us well before the usual two to four weeks.
Day trips from Edinburgh
Stirling Castle, St Andrews, Glasgow and the edge of the Highlands are all within around 90 minutes. We arrange lunch stops so a full-day trip stays relaxed.
- Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument
- St Andrews and the Fife coast
- Glasgow's museums and West End
- Loch Lomond and the Trossachs
Edinburgh for groups: common questions
Is Edinburgh suitable for groups with limited mobility?
Parts of the Old Town are steep and cobbled. We plan shorter walking routes and coach drop-offs closer to each venue.
Can you organise a ceilidh for a group?
Yes. We can arrange a ceilidh evening with dinner for corporate, incentive and private groups.
How early should we book for August?
As early as possible; ideally several months ahead for festival dates.
